Please welcome guest blogger, Trish Friesen, from tripstyler.com

You don’t have to be a full-fledged, first-class, jet-setter to enjoy a sejour in the tropics. If you are willing to book a destination you know well at the last-minute, you too can trade your business shoes for flip flops and weekend in a balmy locale with a mojito in-hand.

Here’s How

  • A few weeks prior
    • think about where you’d like to go
    • West Coast dwellers: Hawaii or Mexico are best bets
    • East Coast dwellers: Florida, Bermuda, or the Caribbean are best bets
    • give your employer a head’s up that you might need an upcoming Friday & Monday off work
    • if applicable, arrange for babysitting and/or pet-sitting

  • Week of
    • check your chosen destination’s weather report
    • survey flight fares, hotel prices and car rental rates

  • A few days before
    • do a final check of your flight, hotel and car options, if all looks well…
    • book
    • pack light (refer to this packing list)

  • Upon arrival
    • ask the concierge to make restaurant reservations at your favorite spots
    • hit the beach/pool

Helpful Hints

  • Try to focus your tropical jet-setting to low or shoulder season for the best pricing and availability
  • It helps if you’ve been to the destination before so you
    • know what airlines, hotels and car rental companies are easiest and most cost-efficient
    • know what to expect
    • know how to hit the ground running

  • Travel with a carry-on
  • If you are going somewhere hot, all you really need is: your passport, a few essential mini toiletries, bathing suit, cover-up, a dress or two, shorts, toiletries, sunscreen (buy at destination), sunglasses and hat
  • Local currency or US dollars are also helpful to have on-hand

Myths

  • Last-minute travel is always expensive
  • Jet-setting is only for the uber-wealthy
  • There is never availability at the last-minute
  • It’s just too complicated

Ready? Set? Go! Planning a quick, easy and cost-effective holiday is at your fingertips. What are you waiting for?
